Dr. Abhay R. Vasavada is the director of Raghudeep Eye Clinic & Iladevi Cataract & IOL Research Centre. Having completed his FRCS from the Royal college of England, he has always had a passion for providing the highest level of eye care and simultaneously for contributing to the development of ophthalmology. In 1984, he established REC.

Today, it is the result of his vision & perseverance that REC is a 120 strong organization that provides tertiary level ophthalmic services. He established Iladevi Cataract & Intra Ocular Lens Research Centre in 1991 devoted exclusively to cataract research in general and to congenital cataract in particular.

Dr. Vasavada is the recipient of several prestigious national and international awards, chief among them being the Binkhorst Medal Lecture awarded by the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) in 2011.

He has been responsible for successfully training more than 150 ophthalmologists in cataract surgery and inspiring them towards research.

He was selected as one of the “Top Fifty Opinion Leaders” in the world for his Outstanding Contribution and Leadership in the field of cataract surgery, in a survey conducted in 2005 by the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
Donald Tan is the Medical Director of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), Chairman of the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), Professor of Ophthalmology at the National University of Singapore, Chair of the Eye Academic Clinical Program at the Duke-NUS GMS, and Medical Director of the Singapore Eye Bank. 

Involved primarily in clinical and translational research in cornea, refractive surgery and myopia, he has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles (h index = 42), contributed 18 book chapters and holds 13 patents in stem cell culture, myopia prevention, refractive corneal implants and surgical devices for endothelial keratoplasty, and has also trained 22 corneal fellows from 13 countries. 

He is the recipient of over 20 awards, which include the APAO 2001 De Ocampo Award, the AAO 2006. Distinguished Achievement Award, the ISRS/AAO 2009 Casebeer Award, the Saudi Ophthalmological Society 2010 Gold Medal, the Australia and New Zealand Corneal Society 2011 Doug Coster Award, the Canadian Society of Ophthalmology 2011 W. Bruce Jackson Award, the EuCornea 2012 Medal, and the Portland, Oregon Arthur Devers 2012 Lecture. 

Professor Tan established the Asia Cornea Society in 2007 and the Association of Eye Banks of Asia in 2009, and is currently President of both societies.  In 2012 he assumed the Presidency of the US based Cornea Society, its first International President.

Dr. Bhaskar Bhattacharyya is a medical graduate from Calcutta University, completed postgraduation in Ophthalmology from RIO- Kolkata. Joined in Disha Eye Hospitals as consultant in the dept. of Cataract & Refractive Surgery. Now he is a senior consultant of Disha group of eye hospitals. During last 13 year period, he had performed more than 40000 cataract operations( SICS & Phaco ).

He is actively engaged in Phaco & SICS training programme of the hospital. Dr Bashkar had presented papers , videos, posters in ICO, ESCRS, AIOS & state Conferences. Dr Bashkar took part as co-instructor in ICs on Phaco & SICS in various state & National conferences and also performed live surgeries in various North-East Indian eye hospitals. Dr Bashkar’s main area of interest is - Lens based refractive surgery.

Fam Han Bor, MD

Dr Fam Han Bor is active as a clinician, researcher and instructor, having given over 100 presentations in international and regional conferences. His research has been published in leading peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals such as the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, the Journal of Refractive Surgery, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. As an educator, he has conducted numerous LASIK instructional courses, medical-in-service and live surgeries throughout Asia. He is widely sought after as a respected global key-opinion leader in the field of phacoemulsification, intraocular lens design, refractive surgery, corneal topography, ocular wavefront aberrations and visual optics. He has a keen interest in the design and optimising of new phacoemulsification and intraocular lens technologies. He is an active member of the prestigious IOL Power Club, an export group dedicated to improving cataract outcomes.

His research interests lie in Visual Optics, Wavefront Science, IOP Calculations, Corneal Topography, Contact Lens and Eye Modeling and Biofilms.

He graduated from the National University of Singapore, with a Masters in Medicine (Ophthalmology) and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He received his subspecialty training in cornea and refractive surgery at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

He is the Chairman & Managing Director, Nethradhama Hospitals Pvt Ltd, Bangalore, India-The first Hospital in India to get the NABH accreditation &Managing Trustee Shraddha Eye Care Trust(R), Padmanabhanagar Bangalore.

Dr. Sri Ganesh received his basic medical education in Bangalore, Karnataka, and completed his postgraduate training in ophthalmology at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital, Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore. He completed his DNB in 1999.

He was an observer fellow in Phacoemulsification and Lasik-at the Sheppard Eye Centre, LV, Nevada, USA.
He has secured First Rank in Second and Final year M.B.B.S., and First Rank in M.S. Ophthalmology Exams, Bangalore University.

His main interests are Cataract (Phacoemulsification) and Refractive surgery. He has been in the forefront of newer technologies for Phacoemulsification and Refractive Surgeries.
He has presented papers and also conducted instruction courses and live surgeries in State, Regional, National and International conferences.

  2. BOA GOLD MEDAL 2011 - For Outstanding Service in Ophthalmology at BOA conference held at Mumbai on 27th August 2011.
  3. Toric ICL & ICL AWARD 2011 - For performing over 1000 ICL's and over 500 Toric ICL's, the largest series in India. He received this award at the STAAR Surgical 8th International Visian ICL Experts Symposium, held at ESCRS, Vienna on 16th September 2011.
  4. He was awarded “The Winner of Film Festival AUSCRS 2012” in Queens Town, New Zealand.
  5. He won the "Best Case Presentation Award" at STAAR Surgical 9th International Visian ICL Experts Symposium, 2012 in Milan, Italy
  6. He was awarded the Qual Tech prize for Breakthrough process improvement at the annual QIMPRO convention held in Mumbai 2012.

He runs a fellowship program for training doctors in Phacoemulsification and also refractive surgeries and is a global trainer for ICL (STAAR SURGICALS), LASIK (SCHWIND TECHNOLOGIES and RELEX SMILE (Zeiss).

Superspecialised in diseases of the Cornea & Anterior Segment Microsurgery from London, Boston & Rochester, U S A.

Has over 2 dozen publications & scientific papers to his name in National & International Journals.

He is the only Ophthalmologist in Asia having extensive experience of the PINTUCCI Keratoprosthesis, having done 82 cases since 1997, He presented this work at the ARVO (Association for Research in Vision & Ophthalmology) meeting & the International Ocular Surface Society & KPro Society meeting in U S A May (2001) Singapore National University Hospital (2002) and various other conferences all over the world.

Chee Soon PHAIK, MD

Chee Soon PHAIK, MD

Dr Chee graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1984 and received her FRCS(G), FRCS(Ed), FRCOphth and MMed(S’pore) in 1990. She was one of the pioneer ophthalmologists of the Singapore National Eye Centre which she joined in February 1991. She did her fellowship training in the both Oculoplastics and Uveitis in 1993 at the Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. On her return, she directed her time and efforts to building up the Ocular Inflammation and Immunology Service in SNEC. She has trained 4 local fellows and 6 international fellows and continues to attract fellows from the Asia-Pacific region and even as far as the Middle-East.

Dr Chee’s uveitis research interests are mainly in Vogt-Koyanagi Harada Disease, Cytomegalovirus infection in the immunocompetent, dengue maculopathy and endogenous endophthalmitis; and have made significant contributions to the ophthalmic literature. She became a member of the International Uveitis Study Group in 2002 and continues to play an active role organizing symposia in international meetings. She is a member of the VKH International Committee and hosted the 6th VKH 2nd Sarcoidosis international workshop in Singapore in February 2009.

In addition, she is a member of both the Clinical Consensus Group for Standardisation of Uveitis Nomenclature, and International Sarcoidosis Workshop. Dr Chee was instrumental in the formation of the Asia Pacific Intraocular Study Group in June 2006 of which she is the Secretary General. She organized both the inaugural and second meeting in Singapore. Dr Chee’s other passion is in cataract surgery. She is actively engaged in the evaluation of cutting edge technology intraocular lenses (IOL) and phacoemulsification equipment. She specializes in anterior segment reconstruction and managing complicated cases, such as subluxated cataracts and IOLs. She has been invited to speak on her technique of cataract surgery both in the region and internationally, and has been the director of many cataract teaching courses and performed numerous live surgeries. She has also developed new techniques for managing complicated cataracts, which she has published. In addition to clinical work and research, Dr Chee is a keen teacher and received the Best Teacher award by SNEC in 2000 and the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement award 2007. She is also an Asia Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (APACRS) Certified Educator (A.C.E), recognized for her contribution in teaching cataract surgery in the region. She has over 100 peer review publications, co-authored 3 textbooks and contributed several book chapters.

Daya Sharma, MD

Daya SHARMA, MD

Dr Daya Sharma is a Corneal, Cataract and Refractive surgeon. He underwent fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, which encompassed modern lamellar corneal grafting techniques (including laser-assisted corneal grafts), intracorneal ring segment implantation, collagen cross-linking, corneal laser refractive surgery and phakic intraocular lens implantation. His particular interests include management of keratoconus and irregular astigmatism, corneal endothelial failure, corneal infections and complex biometry to optimise results of cataract surgery.

Dr Sharma graduated from University of NSW with BSc (Med) Honours Class I, MBBS, having completed a year as a Visiting Research Fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Harvard Medical School) in Boston, researching transplantation immunology. He subsequently gained a Masters of Science by Research into corneal disease from the University of NSW . He has 24 publications in the peer-reviewed literature, including a recent major review of infections after corneal laser refractive surgery. He was also co-editor of a textbook on Ophthalmic Clinical Examination for senior ophthalmic trainees.

Dr Sharma is a Member of the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery, a collection of leading ophthalmologists and innovators of healthcare technologies. He is also a member of The Cornea Society, the European Cornea Society, the British Society of Refractive Surgeons (BSRS), and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), and was awarded a ESCRS Young Ophthalmologist grant to study biometry in Vienna, Austria with Prof Oliver Findl, a world expert in the field.

J S WONG, MD

J S WONG, MD

Dr. Wong was both an ASEAN Scholar and Kuok Foundation scholar in his undergraduate years at the National University of Singapore. After receiving ophthalmic training from the National University of Singapore and Singapore National Eye Centre, he went on to pursue clinical fellowships in VitreoRetinal (VR) Disease at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, University of Melbourne in 1998; and at Beetham Eye Institute of Joslin Diabetes Centre, Boston the following year. As a fellow at the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, he received advanced training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Returning to Malaysia in 2000, Dr. Wong started the division of Vitreoretinal (VR) Diseases of the Department of Ophthalmology at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. There, he established a formal training structure in VR diseases, and transformed the unit into the largest VR centre in Malaysia at that time.

Dr. Wong had published more than 26 original articles in peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals, and had presented more than 80 papers, both as invited speaker and presenter, at international ophthalmic conferences. He was recently selected as the sole recipient from Asia-Pacific in the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Leadership Development Programme 2006-7. He is an executive member on many ad-hoc and national ophthalmic committees, and he sits on many consultative panels in the Ministry of Health Malaysia advising policies related to ophthalmology.

Dr. Wong was admitted as a member of the Retina Society in 2005. He is the senior partner and the founder of Retina Associates, Kuala Lumpur and currently the Medical Director of International Specialist Eye Centre (ISEC). He was recently reappointed as a part-time lecturer at the Department of Ophthalmology and Department of Optometry UKM.

Dr Ronald Yeoh is Medical Director, Founding Partner & Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Eye & Retina Surgeons, Camden Medical Centre.

For his many contributions to ophthalmology, Dr Yeoh has received numerous awards for his efforts. They include the Distinguished Contribution to Ophthalmology Award, International Council of Ophthalmology, 1990; the Distinguished Service Award, Asia- Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, 1995; Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), Edinburgh for services to ophthalmology in Asia, 1996; the Singapore National Eye Centre Service Award, 1997; Member of Merit, Instituto Barraquer, Barcelona, Spain, 1999; and the ACE Award (APACRS Certified Educator), 2002. The award he is proudest of is the one that his students at the Singapore National Eye Centre(SNEC) voted for: Best Teacher Award from the SNEC in 2000.

He has delivered two international named lectures; The Keshmahinder Singh Oration in Kuala Lumpur in 2002 and the Lim Lecture in Beijing at the 18th Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Meeting, 2005.

Dr Yeoh completed his Surgical Vitreoretinal Fellowship at the world renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital (London). He provides expertise in the three main disciplines of retina disease, simple and complex cataracts and refractive surgery.

DR. Ikke Sumantri, MD, also known as Dr. Widya Artini as her given name, obtained her Medical Doctor from Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Jakarta.
She studied ophthalmology and got her PhD at the same institution. She had glaucoma training at Lion Eye Institute Perth, Australia. She also took mini fellowship cataract and glaucoma at Boston Eye Institute, USA, and mini fellowship of glaucoma imaging at National University of Singapore.

Dr Ikke joined Departement of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Univercity of Indonesia.Starting as staff in 1997, now she is responsible as the Head of Glaucoma Division (since 2006) and the Secretary of Ophthalmology Training Program (since 2005).

Budiman, MD is the Consultant and Head of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Service at Cicendo National Eye Center and Bandung Eye Center. He graduated from Padjadjaran University, Indonesia with the degree of Masters in Medicine. He is now studying in Doctoral Program at the same University as he used to be with his research that is concerned about cataract and myopia genetic. He is also President Director of Bandung Eye Center and President of Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (PERDAMI) West Java Chapter.

DR. Tjahjono D. Gondhowiardjo, PhD has been practising in Jakarta Eye Center since 1992; after completing his PhD program from University of Amsterdam. His clinical expertise in corneal problems were derived from Prof. Gabriel van Rij, and Prof. Hennie Volker-Dieben, the two best corneal surgeons in the Netherlands in that era.

He play the main role in the development and progress of the Indonesian Ophthalmology within the last decade. He started as the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology University of Indonesia/Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital (1997-2004). President of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Society (2003-2010); Chairman Indonesian Committee of Prevention of Blindness (2004-2007) and Vice Chairman/Acting Chairman Indonesian Eye Bank (2005-2010). He also served as the Congress President of the 2009 Asia Pacific Academy of Opthalmology (APAO) and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Joint Congress; and Asian Coordinator for Education in 2009-2011. His role was recognized by the APAO Arthur Liem Award for leadership in 2010.

His current position are Chairman of the Indonesian College of Ophthalmology (2010), and the Indonesian Eye Bank (2011). Vice President of the APAO (2010-2012), as well as the Convenor of the APAO Leaderships Development Program; and Executive Secretary of the ASEAN Association of Eye Hospital (AAEH – 2011). Moreover, he is a life member of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (2008).
